HOW TO SPOT FAKES: 5 ESSENTIAL CHECKS

Fake Yeezy

You can’t go online these days without someone trying to sell you a jarg pair of Yeezy’s or boasting on Instagram about their ‘Gold’ Nike Independence Days.

So how do you avoid this myriad of fakes and blaggers? Precious Few has got your back with our essential checklist.

Check it…

Check 1.

The Box. There are a few things to look out for on the box which is another reason you should always try and buy kicks in their original boxes. First off is the sticker placement. Compare the positioning to a box you already own and know to be legit. Also check that the font is consistent and that there are no missing words or typos. If buying in person check that the materials of the box feel right and the kicks actually fit.

Check 2.

The Tag. On the inside of the tongue you’ll find the tag. In the case of Nike, all their webs have a unique SKU code which will match up with the code on the box. If it doesn’t match then something is up. This tag will also have the production date on it. If you know that these webs were released in 2003 but the tag says 2010 then you know it’s a Fugazi.

Check 3.

The Smell. Sounds a bit weird right? Well it’s actually one of the best tests you can do if you can few the sneakers in person. We all know and love that new kick smell. That comes from the premium materials and glues used in the real deal. The low quality materials and adhesives used in fakes smell completely different giving them an ‘off’ aroma.

Check 4.

The Reseller. When buying online from sites such as Ebay make sure to check out the reseller’s profile and comments. Does he have a good history of happy customers? What does his feedback say? Also have a peek at what other rims he’s selling. If he has Independence Day’s listed in all the colours under the sun i’d probably swerve him.

Check 5.

The Website. Finally if it’s a website you’re buying from do a little research online first. You can use www.whois.net to check domain information which will confirm whether a website claiming to be in New York is actually in China. Check what other sizes are available. If the website is showing as having a full size run of a hard to find release then alarm bells should start ringing.

At the end of the day there’s no one thing to look for, you have to go with your gut feeling and make an educated decision. Remember if something seems to good to be true then it probably is!
